Fred Springer only ran only one year of HS Track at Cape Central. He came out for the team at Southeast Missouri and had great success setting many records in his four years. He eventually set the SEMO record for the Mile run at 4:07.2 in 1971. He also set the 880 record of 1:54.0 in 1969. Among other records were being part of the 2 Mile Relay record of 7:49.5 in 1968 along with Bill Wirtz, Rick Barker & Glen Carroll. Fred was part of the 4 Mile Relay record of 17:32.6 set in 1970 along with Steve Parker, Glen Carroll & Steve Stillwell. Fred was also part of the Distance Medley Relay record set in 1970 of 10:12.1 with Steve Urbach, Glen Carroll & Ed Bartley. Indoors, Fred broke the record for the 880 running 1:56.8 in 1969 and the Indoor Mile record of 4:17.3 which he set in 1970. He may have bettered all of these in his Senior season in 1971.
